Free vCard QR Code Generator

Create a free hosted vCard QR code from six contact fields. Upgrade that same printed code for US$15 once when you need to edit the details later.

Name & Job Information

Contact Details

Include country code (e.g., +1 for USA)

You can enter a full URL or just the domain (e.g., linkedin.com/in/username)

Fill in your details above, then tap “Generate QR Code”

A vCard QR code helps a person save selected contact details without typing them. OwnQR's free version encodes a short OwnQR URL, not the contact fields themselves. A scan retrieves a hosted .vcf file, so it needs internet access and a working OwnQR service. The free contact data is fixed after generation. If those details may change, the US$15 Editable QR plan upgrades that same QR in place so the printed pattern does not need to be replaced.

How OwnQR's hosted vCard QR works

When you generate the free QR, OwnQR stores the six supported contact fields on its servers and places a short URL in the QR image. A scanner opens that URL, OwnQR looks up the matching record, and the contact card is returned as a .vcf file. The full name, phone number and other fields are not embedded in the printed pattern.

This design has a clear trade-off. The QR can be upgraded later without changing the printed square, but every scan depends on an internet connection, the OwnQR redirect service and an active record. The free flow also logs the scan event, including device type, operating system and network-derived city and country information. It does not identify the scanner by name or provide a way to contact that person.

What the person scanning will see

Phone behaviour varies. A camera may first show the OwnQR link, then open a save-contact view or download the .vcf file and ask which contact app should handle it. Test the finished QR on more than one phone before printing, and place a short instruction such as “Scan to save my contact” beside the code so the expected result is clear.

Build the contact file from six supported fields

Full Name is required. Organization, Title, Mobile Phone, Email and one Website or LinkedIn URL are optional. A blank optional field is left out of the hosted contact card. Use a complete URL beginning with https:// and include a country code in the phone number when people outside your home region may scan the card.

The current generator does not import an existing .vcf file. If a contact app already holds your details, open that record and copy only the supported fields into the form. Review the generated result for spelling, number formatting and the correct public-facing email before downloading it.

A vCard QR is not a hosted profile platform

This tool delivers a contact file through a hosted redirect. It does not create an NFC card, CRM record, team directory or multi-link profile. OwnQR also sells a separate US$15 Hosted vCard Page, but that page is a different product from the editable redirect QR described here.

Choose the vCard QR option that fits the print job

Free hosted vCard QR

Creator Pack

US$39 one-time

5 editable hosted redirect QRs

  • ✓Each code has its own editable destination.
  • ✓Manage the five codes from an OwnQR account.
  • ✓Scan analytics are included.
  • ✓This named plan has no recurring charge.

All three options use OwnQR-hosted infrastructure and require an internet connection when scanned.

Start with the free option when the contact details are unlikely to change and reliable internet access is available where the card will be scanned. Choose the US$15 Editable QR plan before a large print run when a phone number, role, employer or link may change.

The important distinction is not “paper versus digital.” It is whether the printed QR should keep pointing to the same fixed contact record or whether an OwnQR account should be able to replace the details behind that existing code. Both choices use a hosted redirect. If you need an offline, self-contained vCard QR whose contact data is inside the pattern, this OwnQR tool is not that product.

Fixed contact data or editable contact data?

Free hosted vCard QR

Use the free option for a short-lived card, event badge or contact sheet whose details are unlikely to change. It needs no account, but changing a field later requires a new QR and a reprint.

Editable one-time plans

Use the US$15 Editable QR plan when one printed code needs to survive a job-title, phone-number or link change. Use the US$39 Creator Pack when five separate editable codes are required. Each named plan is a one-time purchase with no recurring charge on that plan.

Create and proof the vCard QR before printing

1. Enter only public contact fields

Full Name is required. Add the organization, title, mobile number, email and one Website or LinkedIn URL only when you are comfortable printing those details for others to access.

2. Use complete, current values

Include the phone country code and enter the full https:// address for the website or LinkedIn field. Check that the email belongs on a public business card.

3. Generate and scan-test

Scan the preview on a second phone. Confirm the name, phone, email and link are correct, and note whether the device opens a contact view or downloads the .vcf file.

4. Export and print one proof

Download PNG or JPG for common layouts, or SVG for scalable print artwork. Print one physical proof on the intended stock and scan it before approving the full run.

Put the QR on a business card without making it hard to scan

Give the QR enough room and preserve a clear quiet zone on every side. A dark pattern on a light background is the safest starting point. Avoid stretching the image, placing it across a fold or cut line, or surrounding it with visual clutter. The exact safe size depends on scanning distance, data density, print quality, contrast and logo treatment.

Add a result-oriented label such as “Scan to save my contact,” not just “Scan me.” Print one proof, scan it under ordinary lighting with more than one phone, and check the contact file as well as the QR image. If the card will be used where mobile service is unreliable, remember that this hosted QR cannot retrieve the .vcf file without a working connection.

Export and logo settings

  • ✓Download PNG, JPG or SVG; use SVG when the print workflow needs artwork that stays sharp when resized.
  • ✓Keep the QR proportional and preserve the full quiet zone.
  • ✓Use strong foreground-to-background contrast.
  • ✓OwnQR renders the QR at error-correction level H.
  • ✓An added logo defaults to 22% of the QR and is capped by OwnQR at 28%.
  • ✓Scan-test again after changing colours, size, logo or print stock.

Make one printed vCard QR editable

The US$15 Editable QR plan upgrades one existing free QR in place, keeping its short slug so the printed pattern does not need to be replaced. It is a one-time purchase and has no recurring charge on that named plan.

The US$39 Creator Pack creates five editable hosted redirect QRs and is also a one-time purchase with no recurring charge on that named plan. Both options depend on OwnQR's hosted redirect service. See the pricing page before purchasing.

What is a vCard QR code?

Add the contact information you want people to save, generate the QR, then test it with your phone before printing. Then generate the QR and download it for your business card, badge, email signature, flyer, or networking material.

A vCard QR code turns contact information into a scannable QR.

Typical vCard fields include: name; organization; job title; phone number; email; website.

A vCard QR code contains structured contact information that a compatible phone can read and offer to save into contacts.

When a compatible phone scans the QR, it can present the contact information for the user to review and save.

That removes one of the biggest friction points of paper business cards:

manually typing a phone number, email, and company name into a contacts app.

Two kinds of vCard QR code

This is the decision to make before you print.

Option 1 — Static vCard QR

In the classic version of this format, the contact data is encoded directly in the QR pattern.

QR
→ contact data
  • Free.
  • No login required.
  • No hosted redirect required for the QR data itself.
  • Can work without relying on a destination webpage.

Trade-offs: changing your phone, title, or email changes the encoded data; the existing printed QR cannot be remotely rewritten; more contact fields can produce a denser QR pattern.

Static is a strong choice when your details are unlikely to change.

Option 2 — Dynamic / editable vCard workflow

The printed QR points through a hosted redirect or managed destination.

Printed QR
→ managed URL
→ current contact destination

The printed pattern stays the same while the destination behind it can be updated.

  • Update the destination after printing.
  • Preserve existing business cards when information changes.
  • Scan analytics can be included.

Trade-offs: depends on hosted redirect infrastructure; provider terms matter; may be paid.

OwnQR's current one-time dynamic option costs US$15 per code. No recurring subscription is required for that one-time option. OwnQR also offers an optional monthly plan.

How OwnQR specifically implements this: OwnQR's own free plan does not actually embed the contact data directly in the QR pattern the way the classic “Option 1” above does. It uses the same hosted short-link mechanism as the paid option — the QR encodes an ownqrcode.com/r/… link that resolves to your contact file when scanned. The free and $15 plans differ in whether that linked file can be edited afterward, not in whether a live OwnQR redirect is involved. See “What happens when someone scans a vCard QR?” below for the exact mechanism.

Which vCard QR should you use on a business card?

Use this table.

SituationBetter starting point
Personal details are stableFree static vCard
Job title / website may changeEditable dynamic option
You never want a hosted redirectA fully offline static format from another generator — OwnQR's own QR always uses a hosted link, see note above
You want scan analyticsDynamic (OwnQR records scans on both plans, but only the paid plan lets you change what's behind them)
You are printing hundreds of cardsDynamic becomes more valuable if details may change
You only need a website/LinkedIn linkA URL QR may be simpler than a full vCard
You need a complete hosted digital-card platform with NFC/team adminUse a dedicated digital-business-card platform

This last distinction is important.

A vCard QR generator and a full digital business card SaaS are not automatically the same product.

OwnQR should not pretend to offer NFC cards, team card administration, or every feature of dedicated digital-business-card platforms.

How to create a vCard QR code

1. Enter only the contact information you want to share

Common fields:

First name
Last name
Company
Job title
Mobile
Email
Website

Do not include information just because the form has a field for it.

Anything placed on a public business card should be treated as public contact information.

2. Generate the QR

The preview should update from the contact data.

3. Download a print-friendly format

For business cards, SVG is ideal when your print workflow supports it because vector graphics scale cleanly.

PNG can also work when exported at sufficient resolution.

4. Test before printing

Scan it with the actual phone workflow you expect recipients to use.

Verify:

  • The contact information is correct.
  • Phone number includes the right country code.
  • Email has no typo.
  • Company/title are in the expected fields.
  • Website opens correctly.

5. Print a physical proof

Do not order a large business-card batch based only on an on-screen QR preview.

What happens when someone scans a vCard QR?

A static vCard QR contains structured contact data. Conceptually:

BEGIN:VCARD
VERSION:...
FN:...
ORG:...
TEL:...
EMAIL:...
URL:...
END:VCARD

The scanner/contact workflow interprets that data and allows the person to save it.

The exact screen differs across phones and apps.

That is why the safest publishing standard is:

test the final QR on actual target devices before printing at scale.

On OwnQR, both the free and $15 plans build exactly this kind of BEGIN:VCARD payload — the difference is that it is stored behind a hosted OwnQR link rather than inside the printed pattern, and only the $15 plan lets that stored payload be edited after printing.

vCard 3.0 vs 4.0: what should a QR generator use?

vCard has multiple versions.

In real-world QR use, compatibility matters more than choosing the newest version purely because it has a higher version number.

Current competing vCard generators often use vCard 3.0 because it has broad compatibility across common contact applications.

OwnQR's production generator currently emits vCard 3.0 (confirmed from its serializer). Compatibility with vCard 3.0 is broad across modern iPhone and Android contact apps, but exact field handling can still differ by device and app — test the specific QR OwnQR produces on your own target devices before a large print run rather than assuming universal behavior.

Static vCard density: why fewer fields can scan better

A static vCard stores the contact payload inside the QR itself. More data means:

more characters
→ more QR modules / higher version
→ denser pattern

A dense QR can still work, but at a small business-card size it gives the camera less margin.

Practical recommendation: include the fields people actually need; avoid unnecessary long text; use strong contrast; preserve the quiet zone; print large enough; test the physical proof.

For exact sizing guidance, see minimum QR code size for printing.

OwnQR's own vCard QR does not vary in density with how many fields you fill in, because the printed pattern always encodes a fixed-length hosted link rather than the contact data itself — the density trade-off above applies to classic embedded-data vCard QR codes.

What size should a vCard QR be on a business card?

There is no magic size that works in every design.

The required size depends on: QR density; print quality; contrast; viewing distance; material; logo/design choices.

For a normal business card, around 2–2.5 cm (0.8–1 inch) or larger is a useful starting range, not an ISO guarantee.

Test the real printed card.

If your vCard QR is unusually dense, increase size rather than forcing it into a tiny corner.

For the complete sizing formula, use the QR size guide.

Where should the QR go on a business card?

This page owns the generator intent, not the entire print-design topic.

The short answer:

  • Give the QR enough clear space.
  • Do not crop the quiet zone.
  • Place it where it can be scanned without covering text.
  • Add a simple call to action such as Scan to save my contact.

For full physical-card placement and print guidance, see QR code business cards.

What should your business card QR open?

A vCard is not always the best answer. Use the destination that matches the networking job.

vCard

Best when the primary action is: “Save my phone/email/company to contacts.”

Website

Best when you want: “Visit my company or portfolio.”

LinkedIn

Best when the main goal is: “Connect with me professionally.”

Booking page

Best when the primary next action is: “Schedule a meeting.”

Hosted digital business card

Best when you want: richer profile; multiple links; photos/media; lead capture; updateable content.

Do not make a vCard more complex than necessary.

This table prevents a common SEO mistake:

targeting the enormous “digital business card” head term with a simple vCard tool that does not match the full product intent.

OwnQR's intended query territory is narrower: vcard qr code generator; business card qr code generator; digital business card qr code.

Can I make a free vCard QR code?

Yes.

OwnQR's static vCard generator can be used without a paid dynamic plan.

The key trade-off is editability:

FREE
contact details fixed after generation

versus:

$15 ONE-TIME
destination can be changed later
hosted redirect involved

If your job title or phone number is likely to change before the printed cards disappear, decide that before printing.

Can I change my vCard after printing?

Free vCard

No. The contact details behind the printed QR are fixed after generation. You need to generate a new QR and update the physical material.

$15 dynamic / hosted workflow

You can change the managed destination without changing the QR pattern, subject to the product's actual editing capability.

See how to change a QR destination after printing.

Does a vCard QR code expire?

A static vCard QR does not normally have a time-based expiry in the QR symbol.

A hosted dynamic vCard workflow adds infrastructure dependencies.

For the full distinction between QR pattern; redirect; domain; destination; provider/account, see

Do QR codes expire?

Privacy: what information should you put in a vCard QR?

Treat a vCard printed on a business card as public information.

Good candidates: work phone; work email; company; title; public website.

Think carefully before including: private home address; personal phone; personal email; information you would not print visibly on the card.

The QR is not a privacy shield.

Scanning simply makes the information machine-readable.

Business-card test checklist

Before sending the card to print:

Contact data

  • Name spelled correctly
  • Correct company
  • Correct title
  • Phone includes country code
  • Email has no typo
  • Website uses production URL

QR

  • Strong contrast
  • Quiet zone intact
  • Not stretched/distorted
  • Large enough
  • SVG or sufficient-resolution PNG

Device

  • Test current iPhone
  • Test current Android
  • Confirm contact fields land correctly

Print

  • Scan physical proof
  • Test under normal lighting
  • Do not approve the full batch until proof passes

Why an editable vCard can save a reprint

Suppose 500 cards say:

Senior Consultant

Then your role changes.

With a static vCard, the old QR still saves the old title.

With an editable dynamic destination, the same printed QR can point to an updated contact destination.

On OwnQR, that's the $15 plan.

The economics are not about the QR.

They are about avoiding:

design correction
+
500-card reprint
+
shipping
+
old-card waste

That is the strongest commercial reason to pay for editability.

OwnQR's one-time dynamic option

OwnQR currently offers a US$15 one-time dynamic QR option.

For that one-time plan: no recurring subscription is required; destination editing is included; scan analytics are included.

OwnQR also offers an optional monthly plan.

Hosted dynamic service remains subject to current OwnQR Terms.

See current pricing · Read the Terms

When a dedicated digital business card product is better

Use a dedicated digital-business-card platform if you need: hosted profile pages with rich layouts; NFC cards; lead capture workflows; multiple employee cards; team administration; CRM integrations; centralized brand governance.

Do not buy OwnQR because this page happens to rank for a business-card keyword if your real product need is a team digital-card platform.

Search intent fit should match product fit.

If the need is one hosted card page for one person rather than a team platform, OwnQR sells that separately: see the US$15 hosted digital business card. It is a different product from the editable redirect QR this page generates.

A better networking workflow

A good business-card QR journey is:

See card
→ understand why to scan
→ scan successfully
→ contact opens
→ person verifies details
→ save contact
→ follow up

The QR is only one step.

A technically perfect QR that opens a confusing destination still fails the networking job.

The bottom line

A vCard QR code generator is valuable because it shortens:

business card
→ typing contact details manually

into:

business card
→ scan
→ save contact

Choose the QR architecture based on what happens after printing.

Use static vCard when: details are stable; you want free/no-login generation; you don't need to edit the destination later.

Use an editable dynamic workflow when: details/destination may change; reprinting would be annoying or expensive; analytics are useful.

See the $15 one-time dynamic option

Methodology and SERP strategy

This page was designed against current 2026 transactional SERPs for: vcard qr code generator; business card qr code generator; digital business card qr code.

The dominant results are interactive generators, not standalone educational articles.

Therefore:

The generator must remain the primary page experience.

The SEO copy exists to: explain the static/dynamic decision; improve trust; answer print/compatibility questions; route physical-card strategy to its separate owner; convert users whose real need is post-print editing.

It must never push the actual generator below a long article.

Current SERP patterns also show strong competing emphasis on: vCard 3.0 compatibility; local/client-side privacy; PNG/SVG export; business-card print sizing.

OwnQR may only claim these when verified from its own implementation.

vCard QR Code — Frequently Asked Questions

What is a vCard QR code?
It is a QR code used to deliver a contact card. With OwnQR, the QR opens a hosted .vcf file that a compatible phone can preview or save. For a deeper explanation of the file format, use the separate “What is a vCard?” resource linked below.
What does the free OwnQR vCard QR actually contain?
It contains a short OwnQR URL under the /r/ path, not the contact fields themselves. OwnQR stores the contact data server-side and returns the .vcf file when that URL is scanned.
Is the free QR editable after I create it?
No. Its contact data is fixed after generation. To change a field on the free option, create a new QR and replace the printed image. The US$15 Editable QR plan can instead upgrade that existing free QR in place.
Does scanning require internet access?
Yes. The phone must reach OwnQR to retrieve the hosted contact file. If the card will be used in a location with unreliable connectivity, an offline self-contained vCard QR from another provider may be a better fit.
Do I need an account for the free option?
No. You can complete the six-field form, generate the QR and download it without an account. An account is required to buy and manage an editable option.
What changes when I buy the US$15 Editable QR plan?
The existing free QR is upgraded in place and keeps the same short slug. The printed pattern does not need to be replaced, and the account gains the ability to change the destination or contact details behind it.
Is the US$15 Hosted vCard Page the same product?
No. It is a separate hosted content-page product sold at the same price. This page describes the editable redirect QR, which delivers a .vcf contact file. The two products must be bought and managed separately.
What information can I include?
Full Name is required. Organization, Title, Mobile Phone, Email and one Website or LinkedIn URL are optional. The current form does not include a photo, address book, multiple social-link fields or an existing .vcf upload.
Which files can I download?
PNG, JPG and SVG. Use the format that fits the destination layout, preserve the QR's proportions and scan-test the final exported file.
Can I add a logo?
Yes. OwnQR sets the logo to 22% by default and caps it at 28%. The QR is rendered at error-correction level H, but every logo covers part of the pattern, so test the customised result before printing.
Are free scans recorded?
Yes. The hosted redirect records a scan event, including device type, operating system and network-derived city and country information. It does not provide the scanner's name or contact details.
Is the contact information private?
Treat it as public. Anyone who can see or photograph the printed QR can request the hosted contact file. Use work contact details and leave out any private number, email or other information you do not want distributed.
Is the OwnQR vCard QR generator free?
OwnQR supports free static vCard QR generation. The paid dynamic option is separate. Creating and downloading the free QR needs no account or payment; the $15 Editable QR plan upgrades it in place if the details need to change later.
Do I need an account?
The free static generation flow does not require sign-in. Paid dynamic QR management requires the relevant OwnQR account/session workflow.
Can I update a vCard QR after printing?
A static vCard cannot be remotely rewritten. An editable dynamic workflow can update the managed destination without changing the printed QR. On OwnQR, that's the $15 Editable QR plan, which upgrades the same QR in place without a reprint.
What size should a vCard QR be on a business card?
Around 2–2.5 cm (0.8–1 inch) or larger is a practical starting point, but density, contrast and print quality matter. Always test a physical proof.
Does a vCard QR work on iPhone and Android?
OwnQR's generator produces vCard 3.0. Modern phones support common vCard/contact workflows, but exact field handling can differ. Test the exact QR produced by OwnQR on current iPhone and Android devices before a large print run.
What is the difference between a vCard QR and a digital business card?
A vCard QR is primarily structured contact data. A full digital business card is usually a hosted profile with richer content, updateability and sometimes team/NFC/CRM features.
Does OwnQR require a subscription for an editable dynamic QR?
No recurring subscription is required for OwnQR's current US$15 one-time dynamic QR option. OwnQR also offers an optional monthly plan.
